- <p> Before the start, cyclist Greg LeMond downplayed his
- chances for another victory. "If I'm even in the Top 20, it will
- be a great Tour," he said. It seemed a far cry from 1986, when
- he became the first U.S. racer to win the 2,000-mile Tour de
- France. This time he was trying to stage a comeback after
- illness, injury and a near fatal hunting accident. On the final
- day of the marathon, he sped down the Champs Elysees, almost a
- minute behind the leader. He crossed the finish line just 8 sec.
- ahead of his closest competition, the narrowest margin in the
- Tour's history. That was something to celebrate, and what better
- way after 23 days of pedaling than a night on the town?
